YOGA AND YOU . . . IN 21 DAYS
There is a reason that the several thousand year old discipline of Yoga is making an seismic resurgence. In fact there are several of them.
We are undeniably over worked, overstressed, and over tired, Most of us are available 24/7, and unfortunately "wired", not only with technology, but our internal nervous systems! There is an enormous cost associated with this. Over 80% of initial physicians visits in the US are stress related. Recent studies also show that a majority of illnesses are related to stress as a leading cause.
One simple and incredibly healthy remedy is Yoga.
Yoga is the ancient practice of a series of gentle, flowing movements and poses or "asanas" that, combined with simple breathing techniques can make enormous mental and physical changes in individual lives in a relatively short period of time. The benefits of Yoga include:
- better circulation and respiratory functions
- ability to sleep more soundly
- increased spinal flexibility with less muscle pain and soreness
- increased ability to concentrate and release stress.
As a trainer using yoga, as both a personal practice and with clients, Ive noticed marked changes in very short time frames. Most beginners will notice an "ease" with their own bodies within the first few weeks of starting a practice. Other benefits are increased ability to concentrate and the ability to become less angry or agitated as often. Yoga helps reduce the chance of sports injuries. Many of my professional, working clients also find that it is a very helpful way to unwind after a stressful day at work or when coming home from a business trip. One CEO that I worked with comments, "often times my Yoga practice is the only good thing that I am able to do for myself after a difficult day."
One of the wonderful things about Yoga is its simplicity and portability. No special shoes, equipment, or electronic machines are needed. Just you, your stressed out body, comfortable, loose clothing, and a light, and portable sticky mat. These "sticky" mats are an absolute essential in yoga. They help keep you comfortable, safe and able to hold challenging poses. They are also extremely light and portable. In fact, its not uncommon to see people walking through airports with them anymore, as most practitioners take them wherever they go.
Here are the basics:
- Find and work with a quality instructor or video tape series. Use word of mouth or a local Yoga studio to find one.
- Get a quality mat. They are not expensive and it is your most essential investment in Yoga.
- Sample a few different types of Yoga, and use your intuition and body to tell you which form is right for you.
- Stick with it. 21 days will gain several benefits, but as with other forms of mental and physical exercise you must continue to do it.
